Discover the Magic of Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is a wonderful city in Portugal and the perfect home base to explore nearby areas. This region of Portugal has amazing wines and food. You would be hard-pressed to find a bad restaurant. You could spend your day shopping in the city, rent a car, and drive to the Algarve or Cascais for a beach break. Sintra is also very close, and a great way to get into nature and hike up to the Palace. It's a magical area with so much to explore. Lisbon is a great place for a girl’s weekend, a romantic getaway, or a family trip. I also think it's very safe for solo travel. Everyone is incredibly nice and helpful. It's truly a magical location with so much history.

Things to do in Lisbon, Portugal

I love an aquarium, I find them to be so peaceful. Oceanario De Lisboa is no different. It is also one of the largest in Europe and you can do book in combination with the cable car - hint: you save a little money when you book this way! When you finish the aquarium, There is a great little wine bar where you can take a break before walking across the little park to the cable car. It takes you on a wonderful ride across the Tagus river and back with beautiful views of Lisbon.

I loved visiting the St. Dominic Church. It is a hauntingly beautiful church, which was almost destroyed in a fire in 1755. They never restored it but continue to hold mass regularly. It's free to enter, but of course when visiting a church (especially in Europe) donations are appreciated.

One of my favorite things to do in Lisbon is to explore St. Jorge's Castle. The view is breathtaking. There are several food and beverage trucks to stop and have some treats before or after you explore the grounds. There are two ways to get to the castle you can follow the tram tracks up the hill, or if you want to take it easy you can head to Pingo Doce Supermarket, just inside is an elevator that will take you up to the terrace of Zambeze from there it’s a ten-minute walk. As always it's best to get tickets online to avoid waiting in line.

In 1755 there was an earthquake that almost completely destroyed Lisbon. I think in order to truly appreciate the beauty and culture of a city or country is to learn about its history. At Quake you can do just that. It is an interactive and informative museum that allows you to not only re-live that fateful day but also celebrate the rebuilding and strength that Lisbon and the locals have.

In a city like Lisbon, one great way to get your bearings is to do a walking tour. One of the best is with Oh My Cod tours! The guide is very knowledgeable and has amazing restaurant recommendations. On top of that, she is really fun!

For the artist at heart (or anyone who loves quirky unique spots) head over to LX Factory. There are several local shops and galleries. I highly suggest checking out Ler Devagar, one of the oldest bookstores in Europe. It’s a cool space with a record shop at the top.

Renting a car in Lisbon isn't necessary, however, I recommend it for a couple of days. With Sixt, it is very affordable and it gives you the freedom to do a little road trip to the Algarve. There is so much to do and several very touristy cave tour companies, but my recommendation is to go straight to Armacao De Pera and book with Aurora Boat Tours. The guys that run it are delightful and so funny. Their tours are much smaller and less expensive than the others. You will get to explore the amazing coastline and caves with the last stop being the Benagil Cave, the most magical of all.

Sintra is an enchanting village not far from Lisbon. It's a perfect day trip. There are several buses that take you there, you can drive, or the best way is via Uber. To reach the National Palace Uber can drop you right at the entrance. It's best to get your tickets ahead of time and go early, especially if you want to explore inside the palace. Walking the ground and around the wall of the palace is just as wonderful. The line can take several hours to go inside no matter what your time slot is. After there are several hiking trails to explore.

Also in Sintra, you can go to Quinta da Regaleria, a gorgeous neo-gothic mansion. While the mansion itself is beautiful, it is the gardens that hold the real magic. There are secret walkways, beautiful little waterfalls, and even a Knights of Temple initiation well. There is so much history and mystical treasures to explore. It is easy and inexpensive to take the train back to Lisbon.

For a beach break head to Cascais. You can reach Cascais by bus or car within 30 minutes. There are several parking garages that are easily accessible. After strolling through the village head down to one of the many beaches to relax, swim, or build sandcastles with the kids.

BREAKFAST IN LISBON

Seventh Brunch and Coffee: This very small brunch spot is open every day. Sometimes there is a small wait but it is WORTH it! Everything on the menu is amazing from the eggs benny to the pancakes. The food is incredibly fresh. The Bloody Marys are amazing. They even give kids little Teddy bears!

Dear Breakfast: This is the perfect spot to start your day. The food is farm-to-table, they have something for everyone - even the picky little ones (like mine) can find something here. The healthy rancheros is to die for and the coffee is the best in the city!

PASTRIES IN LISBON

Manteigaria: Pasta de Natas is the pastry to try in Lisbon. They are not all created equally though! Manteigaria is the original spot for these egg-based pastries. They have a few locations you can't go wrong with either of them. Pair it with one of their amazing coffees or try the Porto, which is Portuguese port wine.

LUNCH & DINNER IN LISBON

World of Heroes: If you are traveling with kids they will LOVE this place. My son said it was his favorite. They have simple fair, burgers and nachos, milkshakes, and beer. The food is good but it's the atmosphere that stands out. Think Marvel everything. They even have a shop connected where you can buy all the hero and villain toys. Walking in is like walking onto the Death Star with the Star Wars music to boot!

Vinhos: A small wine and Tapas bar. The guy who owns it is very knowledgeable about the regional wines and can pair it perfectly with the tapas you choose. I suggest getting the chorizo - they bring it to your table and cook it by drenching it in a liquor and lighting it on fire. It is something to experience. You can also purchase wine to take home.

Mex Factory: Located in the LX factory, is a casual restaurant and bar serving up amazing Mexican fare. The tacos are to die for and the margaritas hit the spot!

Cantinho Do Aziz: Hands down one of the best and less known places in Lisbon. It's a small place that serves up the best African dishes great for vegetarians and meat loves a like. The food is so fresh and the wine is all local to the region. The Chamussas are mouthwatering and a perfect starter. The prawn curry is something of dreams!

Time Out Market: The perfect place to go when everyone might want something different, or as a solo traveler when you want options. There are several different food stalls here - all equally great. My favorite is Sea Me, which serves up the freshest oysters and other seafood.

Chac Mooi Taqueria: Located in Cascais, this taqueria is hands down the best taco I have EVER had. Its a casual spot, great for lunch before or after some beach time. The barria taco will leave you wanting to come back for more!

Come Prima: A quaint Italian place, I know, Italian in Portugal?! Seriously this place is a must. You need a reservation and they do not open until 6. It is some of the best Italian food I have ever had. It's a nice spot for a romantic night out. Try the truffle pasta and the vino verde!

Discover the Old Charm of Prague

When I went to Prague, I was not expecting to fall so in love with the city. From the moment I left the airport, Prague had my heart. The locals are so friendly. The food is mouth-watering and delicious, and the architecture is truly a sight to see. The best part, Prague will not break the bank! It is a great city to experience luxury within your budget. It's a beautiful, safe city for a girls weekend, Solo travel, or a romantic get-away.

Things to do in Prague

BEER AND MORE…

Who doesn't love a Beer Garden, especially one with a view? There are several in Prague, my favorite by a long shot is Letna-Schlösschen. If you walk up, be prepared it's a steep one, but you are rewarded with an amazing, if not the best view of Prague. They have more than beer if that isn't your thing, such as wine and sodas, even snacks and drinks for the kids. You can sit and relax with a drink and the kids can run free. Going during sunset is romantic, too!

Once you have been to one spa, you have been to them all right? Well, actually no! The Orginal Beer Spa in Prague is completely different than anything you have ever experienced. After checking in, they take you to your private room. There are two oak barrel tubs that have jets and are filled with beer! They add in the hops and malts. You get 30 minutes in the tub, beer bread with a beer butter spread, and there are taps beside the tub for self-serve beer; your choices are light and dark. Beer is great but simple in Prague. After 30 minutes, you relax on a bed made of hay (it is actually really comfortable and soft) and continue to enjoy the bread and beer next to a fire. After so much walking and exploring, it is so relaxing and your skin will be so soft for days!

In keeping with the Prague beer theme, The Beer Museum, is Not to be confused with The Prague Beer Museum, which is a gastro pub. It's a small museum dedicated to the beer-making process, the history of beer, and why beer is the drink of Prague. You can even bottle your own beer. After exploring this small but very interesting museum, you can enjoy flights in the courtyard.

CASTLES AND CATHERDRALS…

The Prague Castle is a must when visiting. The Gothic architecture is breathtaking. Be prepared for a hike. There are so many stairs to reach the castle. There is a little break about halfway up where you can enjoy a drink with a nice view. It's also next to the oldest vineyard in Prague. Getting tickets online is a must if you want to go inside the castle.

I love Cathedrals, especially in Europe. One of the most beautiful I have seen is St. Vitus Cathedral. It's next to the Castle and it's free to enter. As always, donations are appreciated. Take your time admiring the beauty of this truly hand-crafted Cathedral. There is such a feeling of peace when you go in.

LANDMARKS…

I personally do not think you can go to Prague without visiting the Lennon Wall. Since the 80s, the wall has been filled with John Lennon–inspired graffiti, lyrics from Beatles' songs, and designs relating to local and global causes. If you feel inspired, get in touch with your inner artist, grab a can of spray paint, and add your mark to the wall. There are cans of paint always there for people to become a part of the Lennon Wall.

A can't miss is the Charles Bridge. It is the oldest bridge still standing over the Vltava River in Prague. It is one of the most beautiful bridges in Europe and is 516 meters long. It is a walking bridge connecting the Prague Castle and the Old Town. Local artists set up from morning until evening selling everything from handmade jewelry to art, and more. My favorite earrings came from a local artist making them right there on the bridge. I highly recommend going in the morning or late afternoon as it can get very crowded midday.

One of the most unique buildings in Prague is the Dancing House Hotel. Even just walking by to see it is pretty impressive, however, I highly recommend paying three euros to go to the top. It's not a large rooftop, but it is a lovely place to have an afternoon break and enjoy a drink with a view.

MUSEUMS…

If art is your thing, like it is mine, The Central Gallery is a must. It houses several Dali and Mucha pieces. Mostly go for Andy Warhol. Warhol is actually from Czechia. The gallery has many of his original works as well as letters to his family. I have seen many Warhol exhibits, but I learned so much more about Andy Warhol and where he came from visiting this gallery. It is also next to the Astronomical Clock, so you will get to see that on your way!

Places to eat & drink in Prague

BREAKFAST:

Coffee and Waffles: Can you guess what they specialize in? WAFFLES! In all flavors. Savory Pulled Beef Waffle - you got it! Avocado waffle, of course! French Toast Waffle with fresh fruit, to die for! Pair that with a great coffee or mimosa and I would say you're off to a great start!

Venue: We all know farm-to-table, Venue's niche is market-to-table. Not only do they do ALL-day Brunch, but everything comes fresh from the local market. Indulge yourself with their banana pancakes, or sweet potato hash with poached eggs. Want something a little more healthy? Try one of their smoothie bowls!

LUNCH/DINNER:

Cafe Imperial: Looking for a delicious meal that is high-end, but won't break the bank? This is it. I know, Italian food in Prague?! Trust me, you will not be disappointed. There are great options for vegetarians. I highly recommend the Truffle Gnocchi, and you can not leave without having dessert; it comes from their sister bakery Dolce. You will leave wanting to come back!

Pirory Mill: Open for lunch and dinner. Near the Lennon Wall and one of the most charming restaurants I have ever been to. The garden will pull you in with its whimsical atmosphere, and the menu does not disappoint, with veggie options like Burrata, Tomato, and Avocado Salad. You will be sure to leave feeling full yet light and ready to explore more!

Vytopna Railway Restaurant: Ever had your drinks delivered by TRAIN? Well, you are in for a fun treat! Vytopna is a casual dinner spot that is fun no matter your age. This spot is very meat-heavy; the burgers are EVERYTHING! They do have a few veggie options, such as the pickled grilled goat cheese with glazed onion and buckthorn jam, and a toasted baguette. Which are equally delish. What sets this place apart from anything I have ever experienced is that there is a small rail system that runs through the entire restaurant. This is how your drinks are delivered to your table! How cool is that?!

Zvonice: Established in the original gothic belfry in 1472 and located in the Jindřišská tower. You will be transformed in time, not only by the architecture but also by the food. focusing on old bohemian cuisine with dishes like Venison Ragout, or Marinated Wild Boar, you are sure to find something you love. They also have vegetarian options like black truffle risotto or grilled eggplant. I recommend making a reservation as this place fills up fast!

DRINKS:

FRAME: If G&Ts are your thing, you do not want to sleep on FRAME. With over 100 different Gin's they know how to make cocktails. Fresh, innovative, and the only gin bar in Prague. FRAME is a great place to start your night out.

The Alchemist: Hands down my FAVORITE bar in Prague! Hidden in a house at Provaznická Street, the Alchemist Bar offers a range of mysterious and delicious drinks that reveal the arcane knowledge of the ancient alchemists. The Alchemist Bar is not your ordinary cocktail bar. It is a portal to a world of magic and mystery, where you choose your fate; a man dressed in black robes comes to your table bringing with him a chest with fog pouring out. You will choose a tarot card, which will reveal your cocktail. Of course, if you're not quite that adventurous, you can enjoy the atmosphere and order a drink from the menu, but where is the fun in that?!
